The Government has asserted that schools must educate its students on disaster mitigation in order to implant knowledge and make students aware on what must be done when a disaster occurs.

Minister of Education and Culture M. Nuh said schools should not only be a place for teaching and learning, yet must also be a place of shelter for when a disaster occurs. People must be able to seek shelter in schools. Therefore, the foundation of schools must be stronger compared to the general foundation of homes.

Since the disastrous 2004 tsunami, the Government has included education on disasters in the curriculum. Students were taught on recognizing the signs on natural disasters, such as volcano eruptions, earthquakes, floods, and landslides. They were also taught initial response techniques if such disasters were to occur.

Previously, Deputy Minister of Education and Culture Musliar Kasim said climate change is crucial and must be included in the implementation of the 2013 Curriculum. Students must be taught an understanding of climate change, including mitigation and adaptation when dealing with climate change. This topic was included in the Curriculum for primary up until senior secondary school students.

Pemerintah menekankan agar sekolah mengajarkan pendidikan soal mitigasi bencana (upaya penyelamatan saat terjadi bencana alam) kepada siswa. Hal tersebut untuk menanamkan kesadaran dan pengetahuan tentang apa yang harus dilakukan saat terjadi bencana.

Menurut Mendikbud Mohammad Nuh, sebenarnya sejak terjadinya bencana tsunami 2014 lalu, pemerintah sudah menyusun kurikulum tentang bencana. Misalnya, siswa diajarkan tanda-tanda bencana gunung meletus, gempa bumi, dan longsor.

Sebelumnya, Wakil Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Musliar Kasim mengatakan tema perubahan iklim penting diimplementasikan dalam Kurikulum 2013. Melalui pendidikan di sekolah dapat memberikan kesadaran kepada anak didik tentang ancaman perubahan iklim yang akibatnya sudah dirasakan bersama.

The process of publishing the 2013 Curriculum books that would be handed out for the 2014/ 2015 school year would be finished this month. Copies of the books would then be handed out to students in second, fifth, eighth, and eleventh grade who would begin to implement the 2013 Curriculum this year.

“There are three new additional books, which include History, Bahasa Indonesia, and Mathematics,” said Head of the Curriculum and Book Center within the Ministry of Education and Culture, Raymon Mohandas, yesterday.

These three books would be used in addition to previously published books for other subjects, including Pancasila and Citizenship, Handicraft and Business, Physical Education and Sports, Religion, Art and Culture, and English.

Students would not need to purchase these books as the books were published using funds derived from School Operation Funds (BOS) and Special Allocation Funds (DAK).

Pencetakan naskah buku Kurikulum 2013 yang akan dibagikan pada tahun ajaran 2014/2015 bakal tuntas pada bulan ini. Naskah buku baru itu nantinya dibagikan kepada siswa kelas II, V, VIII, dan XI yang mulai menerapkan Kurikulum 2013 pada tahun ini.

Menurut Kepala Pusat Kurikulum dan Perbukuan Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan  (Kemendikbud) Raymond Mohandas, ada tambahan tiga buku baru, yaitu sejarah, bahasa Indonesia, dan matematika. Ketiga buku itu akan melengkapi enam buku lainnya, yaitu pendidikan Pancasila, prakarya dan kewirausahaan, pendidikan jasmani dan olahraga kesejahteraan, agama, seni, budaya, dan bahasa Inggris.

Naskah buku Kurikulum 2013 yang akan dibagikan tidak perlu membebani siswa. Mekanisme penganggaran untuk buku semester satu menggunakan dana bantuan operasional sekolah (BOS). Adapun buku untuk semester dua menggunakan dana alokasi khusus (DAK) di dinas pendidikan tiap kabupaten/kota.

Ia juga menyampaikan, Kemendikbud kini masih merevisi naskah buku yang telah diterapkan pada sekolah sasaran tahun lalu. Naskah buku yang direvisi yakni, buku kelas I, IV, VII dan X untuk pelajaran sejarah, bahasa Indonesia, dan matematika.

Materials on disaster mitigation techniques, including disaster risk management, have been included in the 2013 Curriculum. The materials do not need to be conveyed through a specific or specialized subject as it could be taught through extracurricular activities, such as Scouts.

Minister of Education and Culture Mohammad Nuh said the Ministry of Education and Culture has gathered specific material on disasters, beginning from signs of natural disasters up until the evacuation process. Each region has different characteristics resulting in different natural disaster threats, such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, up until volcano eruptions. Therefore, the Ministry has adjusted its materials on disaster mitigation techniques according to natural disasters each region may face.

Materi mitigasi bencana, termasuk ancaman dan risiko bencana, telah dimasukkan dalam Kurikulum 2013. Penyampaian materinya tidak perlu dimasukkan dalam mata pelajaran khusus, tetapi melalui kegiatan ekstrakurikuler, seperti Pramuka.

Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Mohammad Nuh mengatakan, pihaknya telah menyusun materi khusus mengenai kebencanaan mulai dari pengenalan tanda-tanda bencana alam hingga proses evakuasi. Setiap daerah memiliki karakteristik ancaman bencana yang berbeda, mulai dari gempa, banjir, longsor, hingga letusan gunung api, sehingga materinya dibuat sekolah disesuaikan dengan karakteristik ancaman bencana yang dihadapi. Materi mitigasi bencana untuk sekolah pun sudah menjadi buku dan CD yang disusun Kemdikbud bersama Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB).

Dalam rancangan Pusat Kurikulum dan Perbukuan Kemdikbud disebutkan, materi mitigasi bencana disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan setiap sekolah.

Many teachers in West Kalimantan do not understand the substance contained in the 2013 Curriculum yet. Although the process of informing schools on the 2013 Curriculum has not yet begun, teachers in this region want to have an initial understanding of the substance, vision and direction of the 2013 Curriculum.

Bonifasius Samri, Dean of the Teacher and Education Sciences Faculty within Tanjung Pura University in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, said he would like to know more about the 2013 Curriculum. “However, I don’t know where to seek information on the 2013 Curriculum,” he said.

Banyak guru di Kalimantan Barat yang belum memahami substansi Kurikulum 2013. Meskipun sosialisasi ke sekolah belum dilakukan, para guru ingin mengetahui lebih awal substansi, visi, dan arah Kurikulum 2013.

Guru SDN 04, Desa Batu Mas, Kecamatan Nanga Tayap, Kabupaten Ketapang, Bonifasius Samri, mengatakan, dirinya ingin mengetahui lebih banyak soal Kurikulum 2013. Namun, dirinya tidak tahu kemana harus mendapatkan informasi tentang Kurikulum 2013 tersebut.

Guru SMA Bina Utama, Pontianak, Donny Hermanto, juga meminta sosialisasi Kurikulum 2013 lebih digencarkan ke kalangan guru.

The education method implemented by Integrated Islamic Schools (SIT) is considered to be in accordance with the new 2013 Curriculum. Deputy Minister of Education and Culture Musliar Kasim stated that in addition to evaluating academic aspects, SITs also emphasized the importance of student behavior.

The Deputy Minister expected the implementation of the new 2013 Curriculum could be improved with the help of Islamic schools incorporated in the Integrated Islamic School Network (JSIT). Musliar added that a curriculum change must be accompanied with a good understanding by teachers.

Musliar further explained that the new 2013 Curriculum aims at creating productive, creative, and affective younger generations. He stated that new generations must possess good competency in terms of knowledge, skills, and behavior.

He stated that the most fundamental changes in the new 2013 Curriculum occur in the concept of textbooks, teaching activities, and evaluation. Musliar further explained that in the new 2013 Curriculum subjects for primary school students, which previously consisted of 12 subjects, have been cut down to six subjects.

JIST Quality Standard

Head of the Indonesian JSIT, Sukro Muhab, stated that SITs are open to any models of curriculums for education. He asserted that JSIT has a standard of incorporating Islamic values in every teaching activity, which he claimed to be the main distinctive factor of Islamic schools.

He added that SITs have underlined the importance of balancing students’ knowledge, behavior, and skills even before the new 2013 Curriculum was implemented. Sukro also stated that quality standard in SITs is in accordance with the new 2013 Curriculum because SIT urges students to develop a positive attitude.

Metode pembelajaran yang diterapkan sekolah Islam terpadu (SIT) dinilai sesuai dengan Kurikulum 2013. Wakil Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Bidang Pendidikan Musliar Kasim mengatakan, selain menilai aspek akademik. SIT juga menekankan pentingnya sikap para siswa.

Wamendikbud berharap melalui sekolah Islam yang tergabung dalam Jaringan Sekolah Islam Terpadu (JSIT), penerapan Kurikulum 2013 bisa lebih menggaung. Musliar menegaskan perubahan model Kurikulum harus didukung pemahaman yang baik oleh seluruh guru. Kurikulum 2013, papar Musliar, berupaya untuk menghasilkan generasi yang produktif, kreatif, afektif.

Standar mutu JSIT

Ketua JSIT Indonesia Sukro Muhab menyatakan, SIT yang tergabung dalam JSIT terbuka dengan semua model kurikulum. Menurutnya, JSIT memiliki standar mutu yang selalu mengintegrasikan nilai-nilai Islam dalam proses pembelajaran.

Menurut dia, kekhasan sekolah Islam terletak pada pelibatan nilai Islam dalam semua aktivitas sekolah.
