Minister of National Education (Mendikbud), Muhadjir Effendy, following the dialog on education “Peran Strategis Pendidikan Karakter dalam Mewujudkan Generasi Emas Indonesia” at the Indonesian Teachers Building, Jakarta, yesterday (08/09), said that his Ministry is currently reviewing the legal aspect to be the basis for Saturday as a national holiday for students from primary and secondary level.
Muhadjir added that Saturday can become a family day to improve interaction between students and their parents. With two days off, students and their parents can have productive activities, for example having a picnic or visiting relatives outside the city.
However, he further explained that five days school implementation will have a consequence of additional study time at school. Such additional time should be filled with amusing activities to develop students’ interest and talents.
Chair of PB of Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI), Unifah Rasyidi, welcomed the policy on five days school. It also brings benefits for teachers as it provides more time with their family plus opportunities for self-development to improve their professional skills.
