Ministry of Education and Culture is ready to test the concept of character education strengthening. Good practices of existing character education in schools are organized as input, but still accommodating existing diversity. Arie Budiman, Expert Staff of Minister of Education and Culture for Character Development said the concept being formulated is named Character Education Strengthening or Penguatan Pendidikan Karakter (PPK), not full day school. Currently, PPK is in the stage of study and public consultations with experts, practitioners, education activists, and schools to formulate the PPK concept/policy.
Arie said schools that have implemented PPK, the best practices of which are collected as input for the formulation of the concept. Of course, taking into consideration the diverse conditions of schools. According to Arie, a new pre-trial would be conducted in the second semester of 2016/2017. What will be done are observations towards character education best practices in 21 primary schools (SD) and 21 junior high schools (SMP).
The spread of schools range from Aceh, West Sumatera, provinces in Java, Central Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, and Papua. The school criteria are those already using the 2013 curriculum, having a character education special program, and implementing additional study/learning hours. Arie added, the pre-trial emphasizes on observation.
Meanwhile, in I Gede Raka’s view, the founder and chairman of True Education Society or Masyarakat Pendidikan Sejati, character education has not become the spirit of education in Indonesia. This is because education is always approached in terms of technical matters. Indonesia’s education has lost its identity, by always busy seeking references here and there. According to Gede, education must depart from things children need to live in the present and in the future.
