Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Menristekdikti), Mohamad Nasir, revealed that universities must have innovation to join in the global competition. According to the World Economic Forum Global Innovation Index, Indonesia’s ranking has dropped four places. Higher education provides the opportunity to improve the nation’s competitiveness.
Nasir said that our higher education institutions have not provided contributions to the economy of Indonesia in improving the quality of its people. There are currently over 4,300 universities in Indonesia for a population of some 255 million people, while China has just 2,824 universities for a population of over one billion people. This shows that the number of universities does not determine the improvement in human resources.
Nasir added that lecturers must improve also their quality. They must compete to raise their functional position. This also holds for improving their degree from a master to doctorate level. Besides lecturers having to develop innovation, Nasir also pointed out that students are currently in a tight competition. A high Grade Point Average (GPA) is not sufficient to face the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
