The Indonesian Center for Islamic and State Studies and the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture held a discussion titled “Character Education as the Foundation of the Mental Revolution” at the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in Jakarta last Tuesday. The discussion was led by university lecturer Yayah Nurmaliah, Islamic scholar Yudi Lathif and motivational speaker Ferdinal Lafendry.
Indonesia has been making vigorous efforts to carry out President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s so-called Mental Revolution. The initiative is intended to change Indonesians’ way of thinking and behavior to become more progress-oriented, in line with the Pancasila state ideology.
In accordance with the initiative, character education is considered essential to internalize the values needed to make the Mental Revolution succeed. It is also the hope that character education will shape Indonesians to became respectable, hardworking individuals with a spirit of gotong royong, or mutual cooperation.
