The government appointed 542 schools as reference schools for the character education program (PPK). The revitalization of learning and local wisdom systems were integrated in the PPK. The Minister of Education and Culture, Muhadjir Effendy said that the PPK and the dispersion of regions from Aceh to Papua totaled 42 schools in 22 provinces. The number would increase again in November by as many as 500 schools in 34 provinces.
Muhadjir said that character education was an effort to revitalize school-based management. Those who have actively participated were the principals, teachers, school committees, and also students’ parents. PPK focused more on the harmony of ethics, aesthetics, kinesthetic, and thought patterns through reading, writing, arithmetic literacy. The harmonizing was implemented in intra-curricular, co-curricular, extracurricular, and non-curricular integration to realize the good character of students.
The key values of character that could be developed are religious, nationalistic, independent/self-reliant, mutual assistance, and integrity and also could be adjusted to the values of local wisdom in their respective regions
Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of House Commission X Sutan Adil Hendra has argued that the mental revolution required a more overall systemic and cross-sector implementation as well as far from less valuable image-building efforts. The reason is to date the mental revolution is still far from implementation.
