Ikapi Jakarta Encourages Children’s Interest in Reading

Indonesian Publishers Association (Ikapi) DKI Jakarta intends to boost children’s interest in reading by the launch of the Children Literary Corner Program, Wednesday (12/10) at Ikapi DKI Office at Jalan Mustika Raya, Rawamangun, East Jakarta.

This launching was carried out by the Head of Ikapi DKI Jakarta, Hikmat Kurnia. Also in attendance were, among other, committees of Ikapi DKI, members of the advisory council plus several representatives and managers of elementary schools (SD) and kindergartens (TK) in Jakarta.

Head of Children Book Development, Ummu Masmua, said that this program is aimed at introducing the world of publications to children. Children who are accustomed to the world of literary from an early age will adopt a culture of reading as they grow up.

In addition, this program is expected to inspire every individual to appreciate literary works and cherish the world of literature (reading and writing).

Ummu added that this program provides several interesting activities, among others, workshop on creativity and literature including book writing, illustration, photography, books sale discounted up to 70%, library, educational games and others. This Literary Corner Program will last for one month from 13 October to 11 November 2016 every day from 09.00-17.00 hours.

On another occasion, Director of Secondary School Development of Kemendikbud, Supriano, said that teachers play a major role in establishing the awareness of a reading culture for children, especially at school. Test results from Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) proved that children who consider reading as their hobby have better academic achievement.
