The University of Lampung is hosting an international symposium in the provincial capital Bandar Lampung, in a bid to save Indonesia’s biodiversity from habitat degradation and the illegal wildlife trade. The two-day International Wildlife Symposium 2016, with the theme “wildlife conservation to support the economy and sustainable livelihoods,” commenced on Tuesday (18/10).

The event, which aims to become an educational platform for sharing ideas and findings from research in conservation, is attended by wildlife researchers and ecologists from around the world, conservation practitioners, lecturers and students.

In addition, Lampung University rector Hasriadi Mat Akin hopes the symposium will help to increase focus, understanding and measures to preserve biodiversity in Indonesia, especially in Sumatra. He said, this event is a place for interaction among researchers – both in the lab and in the field – conservationists, communities and stakeholders.

Chairman of the university’s Institute for Research and Community Service, Warsono hope that the symposium will become a platform for researchers, not only from Sumatra, but from the rest of Indonesia and the world, to motivate conservationists while encouraging the emergence of more young researchers.

Meanwhile, World Wildlife Fund Indonesia ecologist Sunarto, who is one of the speakers at the symposium said, it is important to have a succeeding generation that will help uncover the ecological riches in our own country, and WWF Indonesia fully supports this, as we want to encourage the regeneration of conservationists in Indonesia.
