The number of Vocational High School (SMK) teachers relevant with the taught fields of study or expert teachers is considered still lacking.  Based on existing data from the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) the number of teachers in accordance with the field of study is only 22 percent. This was conveyed by Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud), Muhadjir Effendy when attending a national seminar themed “Repositioning Formal, Non-Formal and Informal Education in Malang, East Java, on Saturday (22/10/2016).

This condition has hampered the development of vocational education. Moreover, Kemendikbud cannot recruit teachers on a large-scale. Apart from budget issues, the manpower to be recruited is very limited. Muhadjir said it would not be possible to recruit on a large scale within a short time. In addition to budgetary constraints, the persons are limited because their specifications vary.

Muhadjir mentioned that there are still limited specific areas of expertise during recruitment.  Hence, Mendikbud   admitted that his party needed time to fulfill teachers in accordance with the fields of study. To overcome the problem, Muhadjir claimed that he would develop the teachers who did not have the required expertise. The target is that by 2019 there will be 90,000 teachers who are relevant with their field of expertise.
