Innovation is said to be one of the determinants of the sustainability of industry. Unfortunately, many industries in Indonesia have not been conducting research and development. In fact, in facing the era of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) industry requires science and technology, innovation in business competition to survive and be sustainable.
It was stated by Acting Deputy Head of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Bambang Subiyanto, on the sidelines of the Forum Iptekin VI in Jakarta, Tuesday (8/11).
He said the demographic dividend and the wealth of Indonesia’s natural resources have become a magnet for industry players at home and abroad to market their products with a touch of modern technology. He added with the presence of AEC it would facilitate buying and selling / trade of goods and services. This prompts Indonesia to have to improve in business with a touch of technology so as to enhance the national economy.
Therefore, LIPI encourages businesses to innovate. To that end, a science and technology culture policy is needed. Bambang also hopes that through the Science and Technology Forum, creative ideas could be produced by academics, businesses and communities or observers of science and technology. The research results are also expected to be recommendations for the development of science and technology and innovation.
Related to that, Director General of Innovation Strengthening of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti), Jumaun Appe, revealed the need for synergy among academics, businesses, and the government. He continued that the key to innovation is creativity that drives science and technology so as to be utilized by the public.
He added that openness and transparency are also important in establishing a climate conducive to the generation of innovation. On the other hand, Kemenristekdikti sees there are a number of regulations that impede the development of national science and technology and innovation. Therefore, government efforts seek a breakthrough in the easing of rules and incentives to encourage new innovations that could be utilized for national industry in the future.
