Research products resulted by lecturers are less than the expectation due to the lack of budget for research and development. Even for this year, such research products only achieved 0.2%. This was revealed by the Secretary of Research and Community Service of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristek Dikti), Desmelita, at Medan State University (Unimed) yesterday.
Desmelita said that the current number of lecturers in both state and private universities is 180,000 people while proposals for research funding submitted this year are 25,000. However, the available budget is not sufficient to fund all of those proposals because the cost for carrying out research is great and thus it results in the minimum research products by lecturers.
In fact, lecturers’ interest in conducting research is high. However, the limited budget makes them cancel their research plan. Research is one of the indicators for improving the quality of lecture and accreditation of a university.
M Rizal Hasibuan, an education practitioner from Public Research Institution (Larispa) added that the budget is the primary reason of the lack of lecturers who conduct research. In addition, the culture of researching among the lecturers is also low due to the welfare of the lecturers is also still low.
