Application of FDS Inhibits Student Potential

Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud) Muhadjir Effendy said starting the new school year 2016/2017, his party officially applies additional school hours for the application of Character Education Strengthening Program (PPPK). In this case the students will be in school from 07:00 to 16:30 hours. Furthermore, so that children are not disadvantaged and still get time with the family, his party is also promoting discourse to add holidays. In this case Saturday will be a national holiday, so students have two days with the family.

In addition, Muhadjir also said, Kemendikbud will eliminate the Student Worksheet (LKS) system which often becomes students’ homework (PR). The problem with giving children homework is that the time at home will also be taken up. Abolishing LKS is also because it is ineffective in improving students’ abilities. Because the ability of students cannot be measured by working on the LKS.

Addressing the final decision of the Education Minister, Expert Staff/Advisor to the National Commission on Education Andreas Tambah said, adding hours of study is identical to the concept of Full Day School (FDS). He considered if FDS is still to be implemented it would add a new problem. Because there are still many schools that have not been able to optimally develop children’s potentials. So the school is the party that inhibits the growth and development potential of the child. He said that many children discover and develop their talents and potential precisely through activities outside of school hours. So if it is still implemented, then schools should really be able to develop the talent or potential of the child.

He emphasized that the government must pay attention to the means and infrastructure of various activities or training that are able to explore and develop the talents and potential of students. Thus, when children come home from school they are no longer burdened with tutoring or specific skills courses.
