The central government plan to conduct a moratorium on the national exam (UN) is expected to be delayed in its application. Some circles welcomed the plan, but insisted that the implementation is not hurried because the preparations for the UN 2017 are already done. Vice Principal of SMAN 16 Surabaya, East Java, Ridwan said the UN moratorium should be started in 2018. The reason is students of grade XII are already preparing for the UN planned for April 2017. Since entering the 2016/2017 school year, students of grade XII focused to study six subjects to be tested in the exam.

Head of the Lampung Provincial Education Agency Sulistyanto Hery said the planned abolition of the UN was too close.  According to him, to realize a final examination held by the regions, there should be discussions conducted on the budget in each regency / city and province as test executors.

Earlier, Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy said there were three options prepared related to UN. The three options are the abolition of the UN from the education system, a temporary suspension of the UN in 2017, and still running the UN with the technical implementation left up to each region.

A number of teachers’ organizations – Teachers Association of the Republic of Indonesia, the Indonesian Teachers Association, the Federation of Indonesia Teachers’ Union – support the UN moratorium.   According to the Secretary General of the Federation of Indonesia Teachers’ Union Retno Listyarti, children learn to be dishonest as a result of UN.
