The Tangerang City Administration (Pemkot) starting in the 2017/2018 school year will eliminate school fees for the primary (SD) and junior high school (SMP) levels both state and private. This was confirmed by Tangerang Mayor Arief R Wismansyah. With this policy the Mayor also hoped that the entire community could guide their children who were not in school to attend school.
In fact, the Tangerang City Administration has formed a 12-year compulsory education task force whose duty is to minimize the number of children dropping out of school in Tangerang. He explained the elimination of school operating costs is intended to open up accessibility of the younger generation in Tangerang City towards education which is the capital for development in the city of Tangerang.
To support the program, the Tangerang City Administration has allocated Rp1.1 trillion for education affairs which includes Rp105.3 billion to finance the operations of 399 state primary schools, 135 private primary schools, and one State MI. As well as Rp66.03 billion to finance the operation of 24 state SMP, 164 private SMP and three state MTS. Arief added, as a regional leader he wanted the people of Tangerang City to have enough reserves to face the increasingly fierce global competition.
