Remaja Diingatkan untuk Waspadai Gejala Depresi

The Jakarta Post, halaman 4

Seorang siswa SMA 47 Jakarta Selatan, Adela Fortunada, 15 tahun, mengatakan bahwa ia menyaksikan sendiri temannya berulang kali menyakiti dirinya sendiri sekitar tahun lalu.

Teenagers told to be aware of depression symptoms

The Jakarta Post, page 4

15-year-old Adela Fortunada, a freshman at the SMA 47 senior high school in South Jakarta, witnessed her friend repeatedly commit acts of self-harm on year ago. She was shocked at first and when she asked her friend’s why she tried to cut her wrist, she said she was depressed because of many things, such as her love life.

Fearing her stories would be shared publicly, Adela said she had not told others about her friend’s emotional hardship and asked her to let Adela know anytime she felt unhappy or wanted to harm herself.

Health experts say teenagers have to become more aware of depression-like symptoms, especially since they are still developing emotionally and tend to be less resilient than adults in coping with pressures, though the World Health Organization (WHO), which put depression as a focus during World Health Day on April 7, stated that the disease can affect all demographics.

Depression symptoms can come in the form of sleep deprivation, loose of appetite, feelings of guilt or low self-esteem, or feelings of fatigue. Suzy Yusna Dewi, a psychiatrist at the Soeharto Heerdjan Mental Hospital in Grogol, West Jakarta, said teenagers who felt these symptoms should talk with other people about their emotional problems, as it could help prevent them from committing acts of self-harm or even suicide.

Suzy said for teenagers, do not isolate yourself. Spend time with people you think will make you feel better, which can be your close friends or adults like parents, teachers, ustad [Islamic teachers], pastor, or even psychologist.

Republika, halaman 5

The Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) will implement strict sanctions on all parties involved in cheating during the National Exam (UN). These sanctions will be enforced as a stern warning from the government.

Mendikbud Muhadjir Effendy, on Wednesday (12/4), said that Kemendikbud was currently investigating five teachers who were alleged to have cheated during the implementation of the National Based School Exam (USBN) 2017. Mendikbud assured that everyone who was involved in cheating during the UN and USBN would be subject to severe sanction.

Muhadjir stressed that teachers were not allowed to teach the students to cheat. In relating to cheating, the government was not afraid to fire such teachers as the strictest sanction. Muhadjir said that the students were better not answering the questions rather than answering them dishonestly.

Muhadjir added that there were several possible reasons for teachers to be tempted to cheat, for instance there had been no socialization in regard to the content or standard of the questions. Thus, the government will introduce in-house training for the teachers so they will be able to master the content of UN or USBN.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Kemendikbud, Daryanto, expressed his appreciation of the police who had caught the students relating to the allegation of selling the UN answers key in Kaong Utara Regency, West Kalimantan. He said that this had been referred to as a criminal case and his department had submitted the case to the police for investigation.

Sekolah Libur Sabtu-Minggu

Jawa Pos, halaman 12

Menjelang tahun pelajaran baru, pemerintah kembali menggulirkan rencana sekolah masuk Senin hingga Jumat.

Saturday-Sunday to be School Holidays

Jawa Pos, page 12

Ahead of the new school year, the government is re-launching plans for making school days from Monday to Friday.  So on Saturday and Sunday students could enjoy their holiday.

Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud), Muhadjir Effendy stated that currently there are already some regions that apply the Saturday and Sunday holiday system for primary, junior high and high school/ vocational high school or equivalent and later on will be expanded nationally. The plan has been submitted to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).  If it is agreed, it will apply starting the 2017-2018 academic year.

According to Muhadjir, the consequences of the five-day per week school system is the addition of study hours in school. If previously it was about six hours, later it will be at least eight hours. But, not all of the learning hours must be done in the classroom; they can be filled with explorations outside the classroom or school.

According to Muhadjir, the learning hours will be filled with character reinforcement material which is very important.  In addition, the adding of study hours in school can be a way to save children from poor playing environments or communities.  He also admitted that the additional study hours with the various activities in it would certainly require costs. Therefore, Muhadjir said that the BOS (school operational assistance) funds could possibly be insufficient. Thus, school committees can utilize public funds. It can be from students’ parents, alumni, or corporate social funds from companies around the school.

Lima Guru Curang Terancam Pecat

Jawa Pos, halaman 1

Five Cheating Teachers are Threatened to be Dismissed

Jawa Pos, page 1

The threat of dismissal for teachers who are proven cheating in the implementation of the national standard school exam (USBN) and the national exam (UN) is not just a bluff. Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud), Muhadjir Effendy stated that until this moment there are five teachers who are threatened to be fired for cheating.

This was conveyed by Muhadjir when meeting with the teachers and principals in Aru Regency, yesterday. Muhadjir was in Aru Islands to review the implementation of UN SMA/MA. He did not say where the location the teachers were teaching so that the team could work well in the investigation.

He has promised to punish teachers who commit fraud on the USBN or the UN. The sanctions are imposed for a deterrent effect. Investigations until the dismissal recommendations are issued will involve the teachers’ professional organization. Although the five teachers were threatened to be dismissed, the process does not occur immediately; because it still awaits the investigation results on the ground from the Kemdikbud Inspector General (Itjen) team. Then it will also be considered the response from the teachers’ professional organization. So essentially, Kemendikbud is limited to recommending the imposition of sanction of dismissal. It is not Kemendikbud which fires the teachers.

Muhadjir also asserted that at this moment Kemendikbud is intensively campaigning on upholding honesty in school. Teachers’ fraudulency including on the final exam, is similar to cutting the mentality of children who are being nurtured to be honest. Muhadjir does not want any teacher to help students cheat during the exam for any reason.
