Entering the 2017/2018 academic year, the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemdikbud) will conduct educational reform. One of them is the policy on school zoning system. In response to the new policy, Expert Staff of the National Education Commission, Andreas Tambah, rated that the zoning system is indeed good to be applied because it has a positive impact. The existence of the zoning system would reduce traffic congestion due to the decrease of students’ mobility/travel time.
He also said that zoning becomes the key to equity education and eliminating the impression of flagship/favorite schools by parents of students. To that end, he asserted that before being applied, the government should pay attention to the competence of school principals (Kepsek), school management, and teacher competence. The government must commit. All three must be really good and even for maximum zoning system.
Separately, the Secretary-General of the Federation of Indonesian Teachers’ Union (FSGI), Retno Listyarti said that the zoning system policy for New Student Admissions (PPDB) should be appreciated and responded positively. She explained that schools in big cities provide many school options for parents and students. The zoning system will have an impact on improving the quality of education in a school.
She mentioned that the existence of a zoning system benefits all parties. First, students will enroll in the school closest to where they live so that travel time is shorter and the student can walk or ride a bike to school. Students are not tired because leaving need not be in a hurry and their schoolmates are their neighbors. Second, it will have an impact on reducing congestion due to schools being close to homes and also can reduce the potential for student brawls. Third, leading students will be spread evenly to various schools and not clustered in certain schools that give a favorite school image according to the community.
