Schools need to teach Pancasila as the values that should be the foundation of living together as a pluralistic nation. It is time for the teaching materials on Pancasila to be actualized and harmonized with the challenges of the 21st century. This was stated by the Chairman of the Executive Board of the Indonesia Teachers’ Association (PGRI) Unifah Rosyidi in commemoration of the birth of Pancasila in Jakarta, Thursday (1/6).
According to Unifah, in 2003 in the National Education System Law, the subjects of Pancasila and Citizenship Education (PPKn) were changed only into Citizenship Education (PKN). In PKN, Pancasila is taught only as the basis of state administration, not the values that should be the basis of a pluralistic common life. He saw no adequate space to explore the values of Pancasila in schooling. Consequently, there is no conceptualized approach to dialogue on values and ways of living together.
According to Unifah, the tendency for the strengthening of radicalism and intolerance that also began to spread in the educational environment should be a serious concern. The world of education must be an inclusive place, which accepts and values diversity. He added that strengthening and re-actualizing Pancasila values in school learning needs to be done. Not limited to knowledge, but also to be actualized in everyday life.
It is time for students to obtain training on love of diversity and nationality. One must also have to get used to working together and collaborating, critical-minded of differences, which are part of 21st century skills.
