This year three state universities (PTN) in Indonesia entered the ranks of the top 500 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University 2017. The three universities are the University of Indonesia (UI), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and Gadjah Mada University (UGM).
UI is now ranked 277th or up 48 ranks from the position of 325th. Then ITB ranked 331st, and UGM ranked 402, up 99 ranks from last year. It was previously 501st.
Head of UGM Quality Assurance Office (KJM) UGM Prof. Indra Wijaya Kusuma said, actually UGM was targeted by Kemenristekdikti to enter the world’s top 500. So, with a ranking of 402, UGM has actually exceeded the target. That, he added, shows the great commitment and hard work of all UGM academicians.
Higher education expert Edy Suandy Hamid appreciated the achievements of the three state universities. However, he reminded that the existence of PT in Indonesia is actually far below the number of PT in the ASEAN region such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines that had been ranked 500 QS since long ago.
He suggested to spur on more PT, both PTN and PTS, to enter into QS ranking, there should greater stimuli provided. The government needs to provide stimuli to the PTS as well as to stimulate state universities (PTN) because according to him quite many private universities (PTS) have potential to enter the QS list.
