Pesantren to Spread Peace

Kompas, page 11

Pesantren as the center of Islamic learning is required to produce scholars who have deep and credible religious insight as well as nationality. It is important for pesantren to spread Islamic values that are serene, peaceful, and appreciative of diversity. Director General of Islamic Education at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Kamaruddin Amin said pesantren is very helpful in educating the nation and disseminating moderate Islamic values.

Kamaruddin revealed, in Indonesia there are 30,000 boarding schools. If one pesantren alone of the total number of pesantrens spreads the ideology and propaganda of violence, its negative impact is greatly felt for the life of a nation and the state.  Pesantrens should be able to provide a positive understanding to the community. The event was part of a pesantren program that was pioneered by the Center for the Study of Religion and Culture (CSRC) Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University and Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung. They collaborate with 750 pesantren in Java and Madura involving 1,500 ustadz/teachers and santri/students.

Director of CSRC UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Irfan Abubakar said the number of pesantren that spread the spirit of nationality and brotherhood is quite many.
However, they are considered less active in public spaces to disseminate/familiarize these values to a wide audience. One of the objectives of this program is for pesantren to be more actively involved with the community and can provide direction on how to practice religion peacefully.

The program, which has been going on since 2015, works with partner schools/pesantrens and holds deepening of materials related to Islam and human rights. Members of the pesantren who have attended the workshop then spread peaceful messages to other pesantren and the people around them.
