The implementation of the five-day school policy that was originally planned to be effective in the new school year 2017/2018 is not running smoothly. The government needs to prepare a presidential regulation as a legal umbrella for the policy. Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema’s Council (MUI) Ma`ruf Amin announced it after meeting President Joko Widodo at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta. Attending the meeting was Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud) Muhadjir Effendy.
Ma`ruf said that he and Mendikbud discussed with the President on Ministerial Regulation No. 23 of 2017 about School Day which received a wide reaction from society and social organizations. The President responds to the growing aspirations of the people and understands the wishes of mass organizations and the Islamic community.
According to Ma’ruf, regulations will be upgraded from ministerial regulations to presidential regulations. The formulation will involve related ministers, such as the Minister of Religious Affairs, Minister of Home Affairs, or mass organizations such as Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama. This regulation will also strengthen madrasah diniyah; not only protected, but also strengthened in character building.
Mendikbud Muhadjir Effendy added, at this time, his side was finalizing the guidelines and technical guidelines with the team. This implementation regulation is also synchronized with the Ministry of Religious Affairs. A number of schools in a number of regions met expressed they were not ready with the five-day school policy. This is because the infrastructure and educators have not been adequate and there had been minimal familiarizing.
