Processing agricultural products is the flagship of SMKN 1 Pereulak, East Aceh Regency. The school tries to teach students how to process agricultural products to have high selling value.
Principal of SMKN 1 Peureulak M Daud said agricultural technology major is created because there is no industry in this area. SMKN 1 Peureulak, he continued, was chosen to be one of the training locations of the double skills program of IN-1 stage of processing technology of agricultural produce (TPHP) because there is already a feasibility study of the major.
Daud explained the school applies the teaching of 75 percent vocational education, while 25 percent is general education. Such teaching is in line with the request of the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud). However, he admitted that it is difficult to channel their graduates because there are not many industries in East Aceh. So, he equips his students in the processing of agricultural produce.
Earlier, Minister of National Development Planning / Head of Bappenas Bambang Brodjonegoro said the improvement of the quality of vocational education or the acquisition of certain applied skills is very important to fulfill the labor market in Indonesia. Current vocational education has not been able to address the challenges and needs of the job market because many job opportunities that require skills could not be well filled by graduates of SMK or polytechnics.
